BOOK: Lesley Vance and Anna Zemánková-David Kordansky Gallery
At Art Basel Hong Kong 2022, David Kordansky Gallery presented new paintings by Lesley Vance and a selection of works from the 1960s and ’70s by Czech artist Anna Zemánková. The presentation not only marked the first time that these two artists have been shown together, but also was the most focused exhibition of each of their respective works in Asia to date. It also called attention to visual, art historical, and philosophical correspondences that unite their projects despite the generational divide that separates them, revealing parallels in patterning and compositional intensity, but also—and perhaps most importantly—in emotional and intellectual impact. The catalogue “Lesley Vance and Anna Zemánková” includes full color plates, lush detail views, and installation photography that showcases the ways in which Vance and Zemánková’s works are visually connected. The publication opens with a conversation between Vance and writer Stuart Krimko which details the artist’s initial interest in Zemánková’s works on paper, followed by a reprinted conversation between Zemánková and art collector and friend, Pavel Konečný from 1980. -Efi Michalarou
