ART FAIRS: Live Programme & Guided Tours at Liste Art Fair Basel 2023

With at least one live event every day, visitors will be given unique opportunities to engage directly with artists and discover in-depth aspects of current tendencies in contemporary artistic practices at this year’s Liste Art Fair Basel. Throughout the run of the fair, four galleries will be hosting live programmes with their artists, a performance will take place as part of the special project “Whistlers”, and Liste will also offer four thematic tours, each with a focus on a specific trend in contemporary art. Read on to discover the daily programme.

Monday, 12 June

Performance by Marthe Ramm Fortun, 2 pm at Femtensesse, stand 83 (during the VIP preview, by invitation only)

Marthe Ramm Fortun forms emphatic connections with the audience in ambulating performance series and ephemeral sculptural interventions. For Liste Art Fair Basel, she will present such a connection between a site-specific installation in the booth and a series of performances extending from the fair out into public space. Fortun’s reactive works confront a chasm between the vulnerable individual and the historically governed representation of the female body, including stigmas surrounding life and work when you belong to one or more categories of otherness.

Performance by Tomoko Sauvage, part of “Whistlers”, 6:30 pm, Mezzanine

As part of the exhibition “Whistlers”, Tomoko Sauvage will activate her installation “In Curved Water” with a live music performance. Through her music, Sauvage investigates improvisation and interaction with the environment. Set within the installation, the improvised composition includes random percussion with water drops, hydrophonic feedback controlled by water waves and singing bubbles emitted by porous terracotta objects. Sauvage’s unique electro-acoustic instrument tunes in to the environment and generates sculptural and fluid timbres.

Tuesday, 13 June

Performance by Devin T. Mays, 5 pm at Regards, stand 54

At Liste Art Fair Basel, Devin T. Mays will give an improvised performance using vocals and a selection of percussive instruments and objects as an extension of an ongoing work entitled “The Day I Met the Sun” (Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, 2022; Moody Center for the Arts, Houston, 2023). Although they never sound or look the same, each offering is always grounded by the same intention: an ongoing journey of sound and silence.

Wednesday, 14 June

Guided tour – galleries beyond the art hubs, 2 pm, meeting point: Welcome Desk. Please buy tickets for your guided tour beforehand at the Ticket Desk.

One of Liste’s primary concerns is to give galleries located outside of established art metropolises a platform and visibility. These galleries can often work more experimentally, as they usually have lower fixed costs due to their peripheral locations. However, this also means that these galleries, which are essential for young artists, are often not on the itineraries of the international art world. With this tour, Liste Art Fair Basel provides insight into the work of galleries based in Kampala (Uganda), Lima (Peru), North Little Rock (USA), Livorno (Italy) and Kyiv (Ukraine), among others, which strengthen their local art scenes.

Thursday, 15 June

Poetry reading by Sophie Jung, 5 pm at E.A. Shared Space, stand 2

An intimate poetry reading that harnesses the reunion character of this yearly affair and gathers companions past and present, near and far, as a pack to collectively howl their lines. With Elene Abashidze, Sophie Jung, Val Minnig, P. Staff and friends.

Guided tour – video, sound and AI in the art market, 6 pm, meeting point: Welcome Desk. Please buy tickets for your guided tour beforehand at the Ticket Desk.

Technology and time-based art in the form of film, video and sound has long been strongly represented at biennials and institutional exhibitions, while it has been underrepresented in the art market. This year, however, a change is noticeable: more than 30 galleries are showing time-based art – a field which is currently being expanded with artificial intelligence – at Liste Art Fair Basel. Each of the artists being presented use such media in uniquely individual ways.

Friday, 16 June

Guided tour – new galleries at Liste Art Fair Basel, 6 pm, meeting point: Welcome Desk. Please buy tickets for your guided tour beforehand at the Ticket Desk.

This tour focuses on introducing a selection of the 20 galleries participating at Liste Art Fair Basel for the first time this year.

 Saturday, 17 June

Guided tour – the gaze and the significance of point of view, 2 pm, meeting point: Welcome Desk. Please buy tickets for your guided tour beforehand at the Ticket Desk.

In recent years, artists seemed to take an inward-looking gaze as their starting point, but this year there is a reversal of the gaze to an outside-looking one. With immersive installations, time-related media, AI- and computer-generated images, as well as strong positions in painting and photography, artists show how differently the world is seen when experienced from different perspectives, under different conditions and in different places.
