OPEN CALL: Artlab Editorial Fellowship

The future of art writing is transnational, multigenerational, and decentralized, and the structures that support it should nurture the diffuse, the diverse, and the local. As an extension of our mission to champion writing about today’s most compelling artists—and celebrate connectivity in all its forms, we’re excited to announce the Artlab Editorial Fellowship. Since our launch in 2022, we’ve witnessed first hand how providing a platform for critical art writing is essential to a healthy art ecosystem. From our Guide to Seoul to Charlotte Kent on Nancy Baker Cahill to Orit Gat on blockchain changing how we care for art, Artlab Editorial provides art writers the space and time to consider—and reconsider—the shifting world around them. That is why we’re excited to expand our ongoing effort to sustain critical thought from a global perspective.

In our first year, we published over twenty writers from around the world, including Rahel Aima, Julie Baumgardner, Allie Biswas, Hunter Braithwaite, Nancy Baker Cahill, Scarlet Cheng, Samantha Culp, Claire L. Evans, Orit Gat, Charlotte Kent, Dean Kissick, Shannon Lee, Michelle Lhooq, Manuela Moscoso, Syaura Qotrunadha, Andrew Russeth, Kenny Schachter, Barry Schwabsky, Monica Uszerowicz, Wendy Vogel, Claire Voon, and Linda Yablonsky.

This Fellowship is for art writers at any stage of their career, providing two fellows $10,000 each to produce three pieces of writing in 2023. We are looking forward to supporting writers who are invested in bringing new perspectives to a global network of readers, consider their local communities through the lens of contemporary art, and explore today’s social issues with an eye toward discovering solutions for the future.

With guidance from Artlab Editorial’s community of editors, writers, and advisors, Artlab Editorial Fellows will be encouraged to write across formats—including art criticism and personal essays—and consider the inclusion of multimedia and social media.

The Fellowship has a straightforward application process and is designed both to produce a vibrant body of new art writing and strengthen connections between writers, artists, and publishers across the world. Over the course of the Fellowship, each Fellow will produce three pieces of web-based editorial content for publication on Artlab Editorial.

Artlab Editorial Fellowship Advisors

To enrich the experience of the Fellows and strengthen Artlab’s community of writers, the Editorial Fellowship Advisors will include a committee of Artlab editors and past contributors:

Orit Gat is a writer and art critic living in London. She is a contributing editor at The White Review and Art Papers. She won the Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant in the short-form writing category in 2015, and was a finalist for the Absolut Art Writing Award (2017) and the International Award for Art Criticism (2017, 2018).

Barry Schwabsky is the art critic for The Nation. He also writes regularly for such publications as New Left Review and Artforum (as a co-editor of international reviews). His most recent books include collections of poems, Trembling Hand Equilibrium (Black Square Editions, New York, 2015) and literary criticism, including Heretics of Language (Black Square Editions, 2018).

Shannon Lee is a writer and editor in New York covering art, culture, the environment, and AAPI identity. She is currently the editor of The Amp at the Asian American Arts Alliance. Previously, she was an Associate Editor at Artsy and Editor and Senior Producer at Silica Mag.

Hunter Braithwaite is a writer, editor, and consultant based in New York. His work has appeared in Artforum, Art in America, Bomb, the Brooklyn Rail, and the Paris Review Daily. He was a contributing editor at Modern Painters and the founding editor of the Miami Rail. He is Vice President of Cultural Counsel, where he founded the publishing platform Affidavit.

Hyundai Artlab expands access to the arts and deepens the engagement between institutions, artists, and communities.
