OPEN CALL: Seeking Researcher/Managing Editor for L’Internationale Online
HDK-Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg (Sweden), together with L’Internationale confederation of European museums and the National College of Art and Design (Ireland), wish to appoint a researcher with responsibility as Managing Editor and Research Responsible for L’Internationale Online (L’IO) platform. The researcher role as Managing Editor and Research Responsible coordinates, both practically and strategically, a lively platform for disseminating research and critical commentary on art, culture and society.
This new position is linked to the four year programme Museum of the Commons 2023-2027 (EACEA), and person appointed as a researcher at HDK-Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg will be initially placed as Managing Editor and Research Responsible for the 48 months duration of the Museum of the Commons (MoC) project.
L’Internationale is a confederation that brings together seven major European art institutions: MG+MSUM (Ljubljana, Slovenia); Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain); MACBA (Barcelona, Spain); M HKA, (Antwerp, Belgium); MSN (Warsaw, Poland), SALT (Istanbul, Turkiye) and Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
The confederation takes its name from the workers’ anthem L’Internationale, which calls for an equitable and democratic society with reference to the historical labour movement. The ethics of L’Internationale are based on the values of difference and antagonism, solidarity and commonality. L’Internationale also serves as an apparatus for making visible the standardisation of individual and collective beings, and defends the critical imagination of art as a catalyst for concepts of the civic institution, citizenship and democracy.
For the Museum of the Commons programme, L’Internationale is working together with HDK-Valand, Academy of Art & Design, Göteborgs Universitet (HDK-Valand, Gothenburg Sweden); National College of Art & Design (NCAD, Dublin, Ireland); Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Arts and Sciences (ZRC SAZU, Ljubljana, SIovenia); Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW, Berlin, Germany); Tranzit (Bucharest, Romania); Institute of Radical Imagination (IRI, Naples, Italy) and Visual Culture Research Centre (VCRC, Kyiv, Ukraine). L’Internationale Online editorial board is formed by representatives from the ”Museum of the Commons” partners.
Duties
The person appointed will through liaison with the MoC partners: work closely with the editorial board to scope and implement the editorial mission and plan of L’IO for the next four years; develop and implement a structure and schedule for content commissioning and publishing (online platform, ePubs, and other editorial and artistic projects); be responsible for controlling and reporting the budget of L’IO and its associated activities; working closely with the technical and administrative team of MoC; supervise the practical and technical running of L’IO; be the work leader for the assistant to the managing editor, including planning communications and dissemination work; and coordinate between all the partners, with respect to shared tasks and decisions required for successful operation of the L’IO platform. The term research responsible (from the Swedish “forsknings-ansvarig”) refers to the tasks of supporting and cross-integrating the different lines of enquiry that operate through MoC and the platform. The management of budget and the reporting of L’IO activities and work programme according to the university’s and the funder’s requirements and systems are important parts of the work.
The role involves close interaction with a wide range of colleagues with diverse work-roles and skillsets who work in multiple institutional and organizational settings across L’Internationale confederation. Therefore, the person taking on this role requires excellent interpersonal, communicative, creative and administrative skills, and a highly developed collaborative ethos. The work programme will be established and implemented in agreement with the Board of MoC, the editorial board of L’IO and key stakeholders. All tasks within this role are line managed through HDK-Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg, and the University of Gothenburg will constitute the place of work.
Qualifications
Good communication, ability to work collaboratively, professionalism and flexibility are very important skill, placing a large emphasis on personal suitability for this position.
The successful applicant will have:
- Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art practice and theory
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in editorial and publication development
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in research development
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in project management and reporting in international cultural partnership contexts
- Native level fluency in English
- Developed competency in at least one other language of the Museum of the Commons network (Croatian, Catalan, Dutch, Flemish, French, Irish, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Slovenian, Turkish, Ukrainian)
- Excellent inter-cultural communication, networking and social skills
- Ability to frame a global perspective on the question of contemporary European cultural politics
Additionally it is desirable that the successful applicant will have:
- A doctoral research qualification (3rd Cycle)
- Experience of working in a museum context
- Experience of working in online media publishing
Employment
The employment is permanent with an initial task as a managing editor and research responsible for L’Internationale Online within the framework of the Museum of the Commons EACEA funded project (2023-2027). Six months probationary employment might be applicable.
The employment is part-time (80%) and is placed at HDK-Valand Academy, in the craft and fine art unit. Starting date is 2023-05-01 or as soon as agreed.
