OPEN CALL: Professors at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design
Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Karlsruhe, a University of Arts and Design founded in 1992, is entering a new phase, beginning with the appointment of up to five new professors in the course of 2022. We are looking for people with a high profile as designers, artists and theorists who wish to join us in this process of collective transformation and development.
HfG Karlsruhe offers five study programs and seven degrees in Media Art, Communication and Product Design, Exhibition Design & Scenography, Art Theory & Media Philosophy. The following positions are to be filled as soon as possible and will begin in or after the winter semester 2022/2023 or at the latest with the summer semester 2023:
Professorship for Digital Aesthetics (m/f/d) (permanent, W3 pay grade, 100 percent)
We are looking for a personality with an international network and proven expertise in research and education who investigates the historical and technological foundations of today’s digital culture. A particular focus of the professorship is on the threshold reached with the global networking of digital technologies and with the automation of processes (e.g. , in the field of data analysis and artificial intelligence), resulting in new media geographies, ecologies and economies and with comprehensive impact on knowledge and science.
Professorship for Moving Image and Fictional Form (m/f/d) (permanent, W3 pay grade, 100 percent)
HfG Karlsruhe is looking for an artistic filmmaker with an international profile and an articulate discourse on cinema as a language and an established practice in fictional storytelling. The candidate should be open to experimental narrative models, the challenges of film practice in the digital age and its positioning in the context of contemporary art.
Professorship for Media Art with a focus on Code & Image (m/f/d) (permanent, W3 pay grade, 100 percent)
HfG Karlsruhe is a place of media art that engages with revolutionary technological developments, especially in the field of digital media, and explores the respective range of technical and conceptual foundations.
The focus of this professorship is the artistic use of light-based (photographic) image processes that engage with the wide-ranging spectrum of analogue and digital techniques. A critical approach to imaging processes and the underlying hierarchies of their production and reception is desired. The Media Art Department is looking for an internationally outstanding and recognised personality with a contemporary artistic profile, a broad network and relevant professional experiences, who can combine these competences with an independent pedagogical vision.
Professorship for Communication Design and Visual Literacy (m/f/d) (max. duration six years, W3 pay grade, 66 percent)
Professorship for Communication Design and Digital Practices (m/f/d) (max. duration six years, W3 pay grade, 66 percent)
The two professorships are based on non-tariff employment contracts, initially limited to three years to be extended by up to a further three years.
Today, communication design not only requires broad technical knowledge but also a profound understanding of collaborative processes. Digital tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated and interdependent. An expanded digital practice integrates web technologies, 3D graphics, distributed publishing and virtual world-building to create complex and poetic digital systems.
Against this backdrop, the Communication Design Departement seeks for internationally recognised individuals with a contemporary artistic and pedagogical approach, an extensive network and proven professional experience, and who have demonstrated a particular interest in the design aspects of digital practice or the role of Visual Literacy.
All candidates are to comprehensively represent their respective fields in a multidisciplinary university in research, art and teaching across all courses of study. A detailed description of the positions as well as the study programs of HfG can be found here.
