One of the best solo exhibitions we saw in Paris was “Grace, No Gridlock” with works by Sheila Hicks at the galerie frank elbaz. We unfold the thread of the narrative with a series of photographs that show us how the artist uses thread and cloth through a personal path, creating breath taking monumental artworks. From the torn fabric, braided linen, and spools of yellow and orange threads that fall from the gallery’s ceiling to the floor in her monumental installation “En route vers Seville” up to the spools with the threads and the work chairs, and the wall-mountable “Tapis de Prière”, created in 1971. Three orange and blue medallions that hang on the same wall, made of intertwined synthetic and natural fibers, artworks that characterized her and made her famous. Also, in this exhibition Sheila Hicks mixes in the most interesting and masterful way old traditional embroidery with photos that are connected to each other and give meaning to an entire era(!) For this exhibition, Sheila Hicks has invited Paolo Roversi to present his photographs, the result of a collaboration between the two artists. Roversi’s images of Hicks’ works have been specially lit by Stéphane Henry and emerge out of darkness. On 15/1/202, Sheila Hicks had invited Massimo Minini to present 14 works created especially from Brescia where he lives. Massimo Minini has combined his own photographs with textiles of various cultures from his collection. -Efi Michalarou
