PΗOTO REVIEW: Masterworks of Modern Photography 1900-1940
Τhe truth is that I do not like them very much the anniversary photo exhibitions, because I have seen a wealth of them and I think they have nothing new to show to the viewer. someone would support that we have seen those B&W photos many times before, in Museums, in the Press, in Postcards, in Books, on the Internet everywhere… also, I would have said that until last Saturday that I visited the exhibition “Masterworks of Modern Photography 1900-1940” at the Jeu de Paumme. I was there because one of the challenges in an art exhibition is not only the selection of the works, but the way they are placed and the new dialogue that created between them and the space. In this exhibition it was really revealed to us, once again, all the mastery of the French Museums and their Curators to invent new ways and to re-present famous B&W photographs, with the same format and size, with the same black or white frame and the white passe-partout against the wall painted yellow or red to re-emerge the subject and tease us or or even- placed on colored panels that reminiscent the Modernism and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and here is the point that you really can realize the multiple benefits of this historical exhibition.-Efi Michalarou
