ART-TRIBUTE:Women and Performance
Performance Art’s fostering a mode of presentation free of the encumbrances of via-media offers artists the advantage of escaping the limitations of behavioural codes, and exploring the politics of identity. This mode is more direct as well as barer as it is shorn of ‘props’ such as stagecraft and setting. For women practitioners, this implies the possibility of an expression unfiltered through a constricting discourse like patriarchy. It offers them the freedom of an experiential rather than a precedented art. Today (International Women’s Day) we bear in our mind once again the most famous women performers, we frozen the most important and intense moments and images of: Marina Abramovic, Janine Antoni, Tania Bruguera, Rebecca Horn, Hannah Wilke, Yoko Ono, Kim Sooja and Gina Pane.
