Weaving the Future II (Larissa)-Maro Michalakakos
Velvet characterizes Maro Michalakakos’ entire body of work, mostly in deep red and sometimes in black color. By removing its pile with surgical tools, the artist removes at the same time all the references, connections and all the weight of the past. Thus, in her hands, velvet is transformed into a new, malleable media which contains its special weight, but flows-rolls, through the gilded baroque frame. The most important position in this artwork is the mirror and the mirage that follows… Narcissus and Narcissism, a dipole that is inherent, contained and emerges in all objects, as a result of pathological worship, but also to all contemporary subjects who use technology as a narcissistic reflection of existence and coexistence…
