VIDEO:Weaving the Future Part ΙΙI (Tirana)
The group exhibition “Weaving the Future Part III”, that will be on view at the exhibition space of COD (Center for Openness and Dialogue) in Tirana, set up in the interior premises of the Prime Minister’s Office. COD comes as a result of the personal initiative of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who as is well known is also an artist and has lived for many years in Paris.
On view from October 7, trough October 31, the exhibition is organized by dreamideamachine AMKE with the support of the Greek Embassy in Tirana and the Hellenic Republic’s Ministry of Culture and Sports. The series of the exhibition “’Weaving the Future” (2019-ongoing) is a project-work in progress based in the concept of the Art Critic and Curator, Efi Michalrou and focuses on feminine nature and creativity.
The 35 women artist that participate in the third Part of the exhibition “Weaving the Future”, are using different means of expression such as: painting, sculpture, installations, photos, video and performance, denaturing traditional methods and techniques such as: embroidery, loom, knitting, sewing, wool, canvas, yarn and fabric, with a new way, mutating and transforming them into contemporary sculptures, paintings and installations.
As the Curator of the exhibition, Efi Michalarou says “My encounter with the Internationally renowned American artist Janine Antoni and her work “Slumber” in June 1996, was the stepping stone for the series of exhibitions “Weaving The Future”. Every day for three whole months, I lived next to her in the exhibition space “Nikos Kessanlis”, of the Athens Schools of Fine Arts (ASFA), during the exhibition “Everything that’s Interesting is New” (20/1-20/4/1996), with artworks from Dakis Joannou Collection. Janine Antoni was weaving the blanket of her dreams on her own postmodern loom. Every night she was sleeping inside the exhibition space connected with an electroencephalogram (EEG) system that recorded her dreams, and during the day she was weaving on her own postmodern loom the blanket she was using at night. That time I promised to myself that I will organize an exhibition with women artists that are using in their practice traditional methods and means of expression in a new-contemporary way. This coexistence helped me to realize the important role played by women in history: social, political or economic, through their work at home, but also in the development of the family, a role that has only recently been recognized”.
