Multidisciplinary ResidenceCasa na Ilha is a retreat space to devote time and focus to your creative pursuits in an ecological paradise. Artists can intensely dedicate on their work in progress or develop new projects. The main goal is that artists are able to focus on their ideas and projects, enhancing creativity and inspiration and connect, between them, the local community and nature.

Artists work on a self-directed residency: you will have uninterrupted, self-directed work time. We will not pressure you to deliver finished work; you can focus solely on research and development of ideas. However, during your stay there will be a tutor on location 24/7 to discuss ideas, projects and progress of work during the duration of the residency time, respecting artists pace and direction. We do not provide a set program or itinerary for artists to follow, sessions and tutor advice and support will be approached personally case by case around artists self-directed practices. Tutor will give you guidance as well as help make the necessary contacts, approaches and arrangements with different parties the project requires.

Each sessions hosts 2 – 6 artists at the same time, from different disciplines, giving the opportunity to artists in residency to gain new ideas and insights that can be applied to creative exploration and the development of their work through peer interaction and discussion groups. Common spaces will be conceived to promote not only collaboration between the artists, but to empower ideas between different participants and interdisciplinary learning. Casa na Ilha embraces the role of being an active platform of thinking, discussion, production and sharing through daily interactions open to share and exchange ideas and perspectives among participants.

Casa na Ilha gathers individuals with different expertise, sensibilities, skills and backgrounds committed to contribute to the enrichment of intellectual and artistic circles with their professional collaborations and public interactions, also carrying a strong belief in the importance of building a community that shares and grows.

Ilhabela Island – Ecological Paradise and Preservation Area
Casa na Ilha Art Residency Program takes place in the island of Ilhabela, at the north coast of the state of Sao Pablo, Brazil. Located at 200 km from the city of Sao Pablo, is the largest island of an archipelago formed of this and other of minor dimension. Ilhabela is an ecological paradise, covered by Mata Atlantica (atlantic rainforest) home of unique fauna and flora, with more than 73 beaches and 27 waterfalls of cristalin pure water, the highest mountains are held here. Being a unique ecological ambience, and harboring various endangered species, 84% of the island is a preservation area, protected by the Parque Estadual Ilhabela.

The preservation area is also home of the Caicaras, the native community of the region. Caicaras are today a sustainable community still keeping their own tradition and ancient skills. The community is nowadays facing danger of losing their land because of economic growth and interest and local and national organization are helping them keeping their land and way of life. They fish with their own nets and with harpoon to feed their families as well as being their main economic income. The traditional know-how of is one of the main intangible assets of Ilhabela.

The island has a rich historical background, from the original indigenous people, Portuguese colonization and settlers, sugar cane fazendas, African influences and English pirates. There is a variety of legends and stories from each place in the island originated in the history of the island and confluence of cultures.

Being the largest island in Brazil, it is only populated on one coast, the one facing mainland, and it has 45.000 habitants that live permanently. The rest of the island is national park and protected. There are no high constructions. There is one main road that goes from the south to the north, has two main centers: Pereque, the commercial center where you can find several banks, big supermarkets, paint shops, small art shop, as well as other stores and Vila, the historical center, which was the first center when the island was colonized and still has historical buildings. There is also a museum and a small art gallery, as well as local crafts shops and restaurants, cafes and convenient stores.

Beaches are all around the island, urbanized and deserted. Some of them are only reachable by trails, boat or 4×4 vehicles.

There are many trails in the island and the walks put yourself in direct contact with nature. Waterfalls can be reached by different trails, of all levels of difficulty. In many of the waterfall you can swim in the natural pools formed by the rocks. It is also possible to hike up to the highest peak of the island, called Baepi, with a guide. The coast also counts with several shipwrecks that can be explored.

Casa na Ilha welcomes artists with a professional standing in their field and emerging artists of promising talent. Applications are accepted from all disciplines.

Studio / Workspace

The house has a main studio and several shared working spaces, indoor and outdoor, as well as gardens and deck. Artists can set the working space they feel most comfortable in any of the places and can be used at any time during the day or night.  The private rooms have space for working privately (unless you are working with large scale projects, please contact us)An indoor shared studio for artists to work and develop their projects is on the main floor. The studio is full of windows that look right into the ocean and beach. The studio has a small deck and outdoor area for artists that likes working outside as well as a small covered patio.Also, a general shared  indoor area where artists read, work and get together, and an outdoor gallery and deck space surrounding the house as well as an open work area.Gardens are also used as workspace depending on artist’s projects.

Application information

You can apply now  Both individual and group application are accepted. Applications are accepted in English, Spanish and Portuguese.  To apply we will ask:

  • Short bio or statement.
  • Proposal describing the project or idea that you would like develop during the stay at Casa na Ilha.
  • A brief description of what you do or a selection of works or writing samples.   ( maximum of 12 items).
  • Link to website/blog (if you have one).

There is NO fee to apply. All submission will be received and process within one week.If your application is succesful, you will receive a letter of acceptance. To secure your place you will be requiered to make a 50% deposit of the total fees within one week.
