Bunnell Street Arts CenterBunnell Street Arts Center offers an Artist in Residence program for International, US, or Alaska artists to create artwork exploring community engagement and creative placemaking.

Bunnell generates artistic inquiry, innovation and equity to strengthen the physical, social and economic fabric of Alaska. Proposals may address relevant themes such as accessibility, equity & inclusion, decolonization, sustainability, anti-racism, skills sharing and exchange, community well-being, connection between local and global communities, and more.

Artist-led projects at Bunnell or in the community may be in any media or genre, including but not limited to: visual arts, performing arts, social and civic practice, ephemeral art, moving image, music composition/performance, literary arts, movement, theatre, or other.

Residencies are scheduled by mutual agreement between the Artist and Bunnell. Residencies are generally not available in June, July, or August.

Application deadline is October 31 annually, but extended to November 15, 2020.

Accommodation

Private rooms for artists are located upstairs, in a spacious apartment with a shared kitchen and living area. Occasional meals are provided. Bunnell is located within walking distance of restaurants and grocery stores.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance

Artist-led projects at Bunnell or in the community may be in any media or genre, including but not limited to: visual arts, performing arts, social and civic practice, ephemeral art, moving image, literary arts, movement, theatre, music composition and/or performance, and more.
A premier exhibition and performance space with historic charm on the main floor doubles as an open studio for Artists-in-Residence. Available equipment includes piano, nipping press, small printing press, HD/3D video projector, HD video camera and tripod, sound system (mixer, monitors, mains, mics and cables), light board and theatre lights, workshop (tables, chairs), office equipment, reception inventory (tables, chairs, bowls, cutlery, etc).
Bunnell maintains strong working relationships with a community of artists and audiences, and a wide range of government, education, non-profit, arts, environmental, indigenous, and business organizations. An artist stipend, travel allowance, and materials allowance are provided.

Studio / Workspace

The art studio is Bunnell’s main exhibition gallery, open to the public during regular gallery hours Monday-Saturday. It is not private.

Fees and support

Artists are provided with a $2000 stipend, up to $1000 in travel, private room in a shared apartment, and up to $250 in materials / other costs.Please note, There is a $25 fee to apply to the Alaska AIR program via www.callforentry.org.

Expectations towards the artist

To engage the community and impart a lasting effect, the artist is expected to provide an artist talk, a community engagement component, and / or contribute a work of art created during the residency for installation, exhibit, performance, reading, screening or other upon mutual agreement with Bunnell’s Artistic Director.
