OPEN CALL:ÖRES Open Call 2020
ÖRES offers artists and researchers a chance to work in a unique natural environment in Finland. The facilities are located on Örö, a former military fortress island in the Archipelago National Park. The artists-run programme focuses on new and experimental fields of art, art-science collaborations and interdisciplinary projects.
Duration of residency: One or two months.
Accommodation
Our residency house has two apartments for the artists. One apartment can accommodate 1-4 adults or a small family comfortably. The apartments function as combined studio/living spaces and are equipped with basic necessities, furniture and tools for you to use.
Due to the corona pandemic, we do not grant shared apartments this season. All selected applicants will get a private apartment (which they can freely share with their partner, family or work pair).
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Our main focus is visual artists working in media, video and experimental fields of art, art-science collaborations, bio art and human geography as well as other interdisciplinary fields of art and research. We also encourage researchers in humanistic and social sciences with critical and interdisciplinary approaches to apply. In addition to individuals, organizations in the fields of art, culture and research are also welcome to apply and use the residency in their projects.
Due to the remote location of the island and the solitude of the winter months, the residency programme is retreat-like and works on a self-service basis. The residency is run remotely; we do not have staff on the island but are happy to offer the artists help and advice in practical matters and can arrange meetings, contacts and presentations (as far as permitted by the ongoing pandemic situation).
Our live-work spaces are equipped mostly for “office” type of work. Editing displays and monitor speakers are provided for video and sound editors. The spaces can also be used for small-scale sculpture, painting and prototyping work as long as the artist takes care of protecting the surfaces. Basic woodworking tools are provided.
Studio / Workspace
The private apartments function as a combined work and living space. Both have two rooms and a kitchen, so the other room can be used as a studio. Upon request, temporary extra working space, suitable for rough/messy work, may be arranged in the nearby buildings.
Fees and support
The residency is free of charge for individuals and workgroups. For organizations we might charge a nominal compensation for our rent and other expenses (negotiable on a case-by-case basis). Please note that we are not able to cover your travel costs, materials, food or other daily expenses.
A deposit of 100 euros is required from the selected artists. The deposit will be returned after the residency when we have received a written report from the artist.
Expectations towards the artist
We do not expect the artist to realise a complete project or produce finished works during the residency period. The residency may be used as a catalyst for further work or to concentrate in some vital phase in the artists’ ongoing projects.
After the residency period the artists are required to write a short report of their experience. We are also offering the artists an option to participate in our summer exhibition and other exhibition opportunities we might arrange.
Application deadline: 2020-09-15
