We know that the way we travel is changing, where you once would travel 2-3 times a year to different residencies, this is now problematic. So instead of your 2 or 3 trips per year consider just 1 residency trip where you stay 2-3 months or longer. Here you will have the space and time to explore your practice within another community, to meet new people, find inspiration and exchange cultural values.
Nes is a process-oriented residency that strives to cultivate an environment where artists can craft their experience as they wish; whether that may be through conceptual development, research, or intervention and experimentation, artists have the utmost freedom while in residence at Nes. The residency’s structure is therefore left open in order to cater to individuality and spontaneity. We work to provide a safe space where all art forms, intellectual and creative pursuits, methods of artistic investigation, and aesthetic inquiry are accepted, nurtured, and celebrated.
As a remote residency located in a unique, stunning, and challenging environment, Nes encourages artists to draw inspiration from place and take advantage of the solitude (and presence), our surrounding environment provides. Nes allows all artists to enter into an immersive space so that the artistic process can develop and thrive. We encourage artists of all métiers, both emerging and professional, to join us at Nes with a sense of curiosity and drive to connect with this special place as part of a personal experience and artistic development.
Duration of residency: 1-3 months or longer
Accommodation
Our artists in residence live in shared accommodation in one of 2 apartment houses in the town of Skagaströnd. Each artist is provided with a private bedroom and shares the remainder of the house with other artists. Our apartments are fully furnished with all linen and general household facilities supplied. The house is only a 5 minute walk to the studio.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
NES is a multidisciplinary residency. We accept applicants from all creative fields and career stages. Additionally, we offer a writer-in-residence program in collaboration with the University of Iceland; likewise, we are able to coordinate access to additional facilities for dancers, composers, musicians, filmmakers and researchers, or anyone who might require additional space to work. Artists are expected to be self directed and fairly autonomous whilst here, however the onsite director is available to answer all queries, offer advice and facilitate introductions to assist you in achieving your goals.
Studio / Workspace
NES operates an open plan shared studio, located in the old fish factory. The main area is approximately 16x11metres and is divided into 10 spaces. Whilst the open plan studio at Fjörubraut 8 is our main studio area and all artists have 24/7access to this, we can provide some specialist spaces for writers, dancers and sound artists/musicians.
Fees and support
Residency rates are reduced each month you stay ie for a single artist first month 750€, 2nd month 700€, 3rd month 650€ etcResidency fees include a room in a shared artist house + one studio space:
- 750 EUR for a single room for one person, one bed, one studio space in open plan communal studio.
- 1100 EUR for a double size room for two persons, two beds, one studio space in open plan communal studio, (suitable for a couple)
- 1050 EUR for a single room for one person and private dance studio.
- 1,350 EUR for a double room for two persons, (1 larger room, two beds) and private dance studio.
- 1,300 EUR for a double room for two persons, (1 larger room, two beds), two studio spaces in open plan communal studio or two persons to Library (writers or researchers)
Expectations towards the artist
As part of your residency, you are expected to present your work at an artist talk event following your arrival and to show your work at the Open Studios held monthly as a means of continuing a conversation about your work and initiating new dialogues for contemporary art. These presentations are now subject to the Covid-19 restrictions at the time.
