OPEN CALL:Applications DAS Theatre Master programme 2020–22

AS Graduate School - DAS Theatre Master Proof Presentations Rodrigo Batista - The B-side Rodrigo Batista is a theatre-maker, performer and educator. He spent ten years developing collaborative and interdisciplinary methodologies with his group [pH2]: estado de teatro in São Paulo, notably in theatre, dance, cinema and art education. In 2016, he led colleagues and students in an art educators’ strike, opposing financial cuts for public art programmes on the outskirts of São Paulo. Once the strike ended, they were dismissed for political reasons. During these last two years at DAS, he has developed a research around despair and insurrection. Rodrigo developed "The Furious Rodrigo Batista", a double-sided opus performance accompanied by several scenic and writing experiments. During the development of these works and using his body as locus, Rodrigo expanded explicitness into an aesthetic flowing from straightforward language to gore and pornographic visuality, to decolonization as a process of violence, all within an intense body research made from impulses of iconoclasm, indigestion, mutilation, blood and sex.DAS Theatre is a full-time, two-year residential Master of Art programme for research-based artistic and curatorial practices in the field of theatre.

It develops in the form of a creative laboratory for international professionals in the performing arts. As a postgraduate school, DAS Theatre focuses on knowledge generation rather than knowledge transmission. While reinforcing the connections between arts education, research and production, DAS Theatre’s core values revolve around making space for theatre, including forms that we do not know yet.

DAS Theatre invites participants with diverse backgrounds and interests rooted in contemporary theatre and bordering disciplines. Applicants are artists and curators in the field of the performing arts with:
–BA education in the performing arts or related areas and an existing body of work;
–the need and ambition to develop their work, also experimenting with new forms and formats;
–an openness and an eagerness for an international peer environment where diverse practices are shared;
–the capacity to initiate and to develop artistic research processes as well as establishing new collaborations;
–a desire to engage with the structure and conditions offered by an educational context and to share artistic questions with DAS Graduate School community, engaging in conversations with international artists, curators, dramaturges, theorists and curators.

The open call and application form are now online on our website.

The final deadline for submitting your application form is November 14, 2019.

About DAS Theatre
How can we as artists, curators, thinkers and educators engage imaginatively with the philosophical, social and political issues that confront us? How can art formulate hypotheses about our present and future entanglements? By providing conditions for research and work, DAS Theatre supports artists and curators in their attempt to re-think, or to even radically re-imagine forms, aesthetics, practices and ethics, thereby widening the understanding of what theatre is, and envisioning the theatre(s) of the future.

International guests fuel a permeable curriculum, while thematic blocks bring intensive educational programmes around relevant topics for the theatre field.

DAS Theatre embraces the wide range of practices covered by the term brought inside its own institutional name. The programme pursues an active practice of different aesthetics, tools, dramaturgical approaches and genres. It welcomes artists, directors, performance makers, performers, dramaturgs and curators who seek to expand beyond their fields.

About DAS Graduate School

DAS Graduate School was established in 2016 by the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) inside the Amsterdam Academy of Theatre and Dance (ATD) in order to bring its masters, doctorate and research programmes together under one roof. DAS Theatre, DAS Choreography, DAS Creative Producing and DAS Research, have joined forces together in order to invest in the further development of education and research in Amsterdam as much as on a broader international horizon. The school is based as an open and porous centre for gatherings and encounters between the arts, science, education and society.
