ART CITIES:Berlin-Studio For Propositional Cinema
The anonymous collective Studio for Propositional Cinema was founded in 2013 with a public call to action. Through language, actions, sounds, and images, through production, publication, exhibition, and fictions, they seek to reconfigure culture from a network of ideological formations into a dialogue of hypothetical gestures. The collective presents the exhibition “Focal Vocabulary Index: Inaugurative Participation Overture”.

The “Focal Vocabulary Index” is an inventory of all Lexical Items (words, compound words, punctuation, etc.) that have been used as material in the construction of works publicly disseminated by Studio for Propositional Cinema since their inauguration in Düsseldorf. The exhibition presents 15 exemplary exhibits of Lexical Items and Lexical Structures selected and constructed in various manners, including four new Lexical Structures constructed by Studio for Propositional Cinema. It includes another Lexical Structure constructed by Irena Haiduk, as well as various Lexical Items selected variously by the brokering party, data analysis (e.g. frequency of use), for expressive function, and through aleatoric processes. “As intangible concepts (like laws, emotions, words, value) become material through their enactment, the Focal Vocabulary Index unfurls as an absurd play of intellectual property rights, economic inter-relations, and the poetics of bureaucracy. Set against the backdrop of a violent systematic disemboweling of language and its meaning, its stage is a schematic diagram demonstrating potential permutations of how its individual components may function within the logic of its construction and of their distribution therein”. Each Lexical Item is categorised as Concrete, Conditional, or Connective. All Concrete and Conditional Items are subject to a co-licensing agreement between Studio for Propositional Cinema and a second party licensee, permitting the license holder to use and display the Item in exchange for a mutually determined one-time unit of exchange. The Gallery acts as the brokering party of this offering, as the public representatives of Studio for Propositional Cinema. A detailed legal agreement describing the terms of the release and dissemination of Lexical Items, along with a list of all henceforth available Items pertaining to the period between 2013 and 2018, has been registered in the catalogue Focal Vocabulary Index: Lexical Items 2013–2018, published by onestar press, Paris. All future use by the Licensor of acquired Concrete and/or Conditional Lexical Items shall credit the Licensee, in perpetuity. Connective Items are subject to a non-exclusive open license and only available for acquisition within Lexical Structures containing Concrete and/or Conditional Items. Lexical Structures are works consisting of multiple Lexical Items constructed by or with Studio for Propositional Cinema.
