ART-PRESENTATION: Everything But The Girl
In his essay “The Necessity of Art” (1959), Ernst Fischer explains the art;s importance in viewing the world in which we live. In this wide-ranging and erudite exploration of literary and fine art, Fischer looks at the relationship between the creative imagination and social reality, arguing that truthful art must both reflect existence in all its flaws and imperfections, and help show how change and improvement might be brought about. The book remains as timely today as when it was first published sixty years ago.

The idea of Cube’s Gallery project “we share the art …” started on 2012, after Elli Griva’s solo exhibition “small red volcanoes from the B611 asteroid” (5/3-5/3/2011) that included only small-scale artworks at symbolic prices, with the aim of communicating contemporary art to the general public through actions and projects. This year’s art project “everything but the girl …” the Gallery’s new and former artists meet, consciously believing that art is addressed to everyone, and consider equally important both the acquaintance with art and the acquisition of a work of art by everyone. The outcome of this gathering is original works (painting, photography, constructions) at a fair price. The exhibits will be available for immediate purchase and will be renewed, if necessary, throughout the project. The idea of the title sprang to Liana Zoza’s mind, a long time ago, when she read a story about a glassware shop owner, in Manchester who, in a period of special offers and discounts, instead of placing a big “sales” sign on his storefront he put a “message” on which he had written “everything but the girl …”, informing his potential customers that they could purchase everything from his store, except for his beautiful employee, the slogan girl. Also this is the name of one of the English music duo “Everything But The Girl”, formed in 1982 and is active until 2000. They took their name from the slogan displayed at Turner’s furniture shop, in Hull, where they met when they were both attending the University of Hull and both had contracted with the independent record company Cherry Red Records, as solo artists. The whole slogan that “ran” in the corner building, said: “For your bedroom needs, we sell everything but the girl”.
