ART CITIES:Paris-Edgar Sarin
Edgar Sarin was born 1989 in Marseille, he lives and works between Paris and New York. Educated as an engineer, he is a self-taught artist. Within his sometimes hardly perceivable oeuvre, he addresses the audience by creating situations and generating almost inaccessible spaces. He forms atmospheric environments, s!timulating dialogue, interpersonal relations and reflection.

Edgar Sarin presents “Dans son cou la main d’une mere” his first exhibition in Paris at Galerie Michel Rein, he is the winner of the of the 2016 Révélations Emerige Prize, which is awarded annually to a French artists under 35, his artistic inventions, according to the jury, touched the human psyche in a special way. The work of Edgar Sarin carries the notions of reflex, balance and accident, which he refers to as a “Necessary justice”. Each of his exhibitions so far, is a sophisticated watchmaking, which he sets to create a lush, intimate experience for the viewer. He made a name for himself from the very beginning with his “Lifetime Concessions” works. These pieces are pictorial compositions locked up in wooden boxes. On the day of Sarin’s death, the owner of the work will receive a letter allowing him to open the box and finally see the artwork he has owned. The artist believes that desire stimulates one’s brain more than anything, and that genuine art is contained within this tensioned process of creation. “All I am doing is creating images then shielding them from one’s eye for a certain amount of time. Therefore a latency comes between the possibility of an image and its obtainment. I believe the genuine work of art is here, during this latency”. Edgar Sarin creates installations which associate language and music with both the simplest of found objects and the most precious of metals, like: gold, brass, wood, Paris stone, wax, concrete, sun-dried flowers, clay, air and water. Edgar Sarin’s works like: “Dans son cou la main d’une mere bol, bois n°1” or “Dans son cou la main d’une mère – trois pots” (both 2017) demands a lot from the onlooker, who must go along with the artist in the understanding of the work; so we can observe the shift from a posture of contemplation towards a movement of creation. As problematic entities and systems of constraints, the works are always conceived by the artist as a point of departure. They are objects which must be tamed and they are at the same time bearers of a residual energy, and a history that is peculiar to them and which cannot be limited to the way in which they are seen by the artist.
