Isamu Noguchi is
one of the 20th Century’s most important and critically acclaimed sculptors, he did not belong to any particular movement, but collaborated with artists working in a range of disciplines and schools. Through a lifetime of artistic experimentation, he created sculptures, gardens, furniture and lighting designs, ceramics, architecture, and set designs. His work, at once subtle and bold, traditional and modern, set a new standard for the reintegration of the arts. The Noguchi Museum was founded and designed for the display of what he considered to be representative examples of his life’s work. Opened in 1985, the Museum complex was built around a 1920s industrial building, and features indoor-outdoor galleries and a serene outdoor sculpture garden, with two floors of interior exhibition space. “The Noguchi Museum – A Portrait” by Phaidon Publications is the only book that focuses on the unique dynamic between the museum’s artworks, architecture, and visitors. The book includes a foreword by the museum director, Jenny Dixon, and a selection of archival images documenting the transformation of the museum, many published here for the first time.-Dimitris Lempesis
