MIRAGES XLI
October is dedicated to Paris as we have two great Art Fairs that officially mark the beginning of the visual year, the all-time classic FIAC and the new upcoming and promising Paris Internationale.
The 44th edition of Foire internationale d’art contemporain (FIAC), that started in 1974 under the name Salon International d’Art Contemporain, has been substantially renewed, creating a contemporary profile with the participation of some of the largest and most important Art Galleries in the world that are exhibiting very important artists of international status.
Besides its main venue Grand Palais FIAC presents the Hors les Murs programs at different spaces of Paris, that are freely accessible and with no admission fees, at the Jardin des Tuileries, architectural projects, sculptures, performances and sound pieces are installed by: Gilles Barbier, Julien Berthier, Mel Bochner, Hera Büyüktaşcıyan, Antonio Caro, Los Carpinteros, Ali Cherri, George Condo, Marc Couturier, Jean Denant, Christian de Portzamparc, Erik Dietman, Jim Dine, Maria Elvira Escallón, Ryan Gander, Folkert de Jong, Navid Nuur, Marta Pan, Jean Prouvé, Pugnaire & Raffini, Stefan Rinck, Stéphanie Saadé, Patrick Saytour, João Vasco Paiva and Claude Viallat. During one month in October, FIAC invites an artist to install a major artwork or imagine a project at Place Vendôme, for 2017 FIAC invited Oscar Tuazon that presents “Une Colonne d’Eau”, in the continuity of the exhibition of outdoor works, the Musée Eugène Delacroix becomes the setting for Katinka Bock’sproject during FIAC.
Paris Internationale is organized for its 3rd year and is at the other extreme, since the participating Art Galleries are not established but new and upcoming, they emerged from the hills of the city (Belleville) and interact with the respective international Art Galleries. Paris Internationale was held within the hôtels particuliers on Avenue d’Iéna. For its 3rd edition Paris Interationale moved to a storey car park in the Haut–Marais that housed the headquarters of Libération. Here for the viewer-visitor is really easier and more convenient because the first choice was very good for the excellent location and was very close to the Grand & Petite Palais but outside the perimeter of Museums and Galleries except the Palais by Tokyo, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Gagosian Gallery that will present the exhibition “Picasso and Maya: Father and Daughter”.
At Le Marais, Paris Internationale is very close to the Contemporary Art Galleries. These days Xippas Gallery will present Bettina Rheims’ latest photographic project, “Naked War”, VNH Gallery announced American artist Chris Martin’s first solo exhibition in France, titled “Paris TAZ”, Galerie Karsten Greve presents “Perpetually at the Centre” a new exhibition of Claire Morgan’s work, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac will present its first exhibition of Irving Penn “The Flavour of France”, At Perrotin Gallery will be on presentation two solo exhibitions: Julio Le Parc’s “Bifurcations” and Daniel Arsham’s “The Angle of Repose”, Almine Rech Gallery Paris present “Life is Worth Living”, George Condo’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, galerie frank elbaz Paris announced “Steel Unforged” by Kaz Oshiro, Marian Goodman Gallery will present “Surface Tension”, a collection of images from Hiroshi Sugimoto’s “Seascapes” series, these Galleries the last two years have surpassed themselves. Meanwhile the four finalists of the Marcel Duchamp Prize are invited to show at the Centre Pompidou, Maja Bajevic, Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige, Charlotte Moth and Vittorio Santoro (all of whom already have works in the Centre Pompidou’s collections) have created new works. La maison rouge continues its cycle of exhibitions showing private collections. After Artur Walther in 2015 and Bruno Decharme in 2014, Marin Karmitz unveils a significant part of his collection, with 400 works that question how we are in the world.
Jeu de Paume presents the solo exhibition’s “Subterranean” by Ali Kazma and Albert Renger-Patzsch’s “Things”. At the other side of Seine at Monnaie de Paris the group exhibition “Women House” brings together 39 female artists of the 20th and 21st centuries who take up this complex subject and place women at the center of a history of which they were absent.
Finally from Le Marais it’s much easier to visit Belleville’s Art Galleries by metro.
Good Month(!)
