BOOK:Ed Atkins-SKIRA Editore
Ed Atkins’ work is at once a disturbing diagnosis of a digitally mediated present-day, and an absurd prophecy of things to come. Ambivalent towards the promises of technology, the work suggests that it might be possible to salvage subjectivity through a sincere burlesque of love and hate, suspending a hysterical sentimentality within the desperate lives of the surrogate virtual characters Atkins creates. Ed Atkins catalogue for his solo exhibition (27/9/16-219/1/17) at Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, both in Turin, has been published by SKIRA Editore. This exhibition was conceived by Ed Atkins as a holistic installation especially for the spaces of our museum. Installed in five galleries, the exhibition presented the video installations: “Even Pricks” (2013),” Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths” (2013), “Ribbons” (2014), “Happy Birthday!!!” (2014) and “Hisser” (2015). With new essays by the editors (Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Marianna Vecellio) and by Irene Calderoni and Chiara Vecchiarelli, the book contains a scholarly timeline and an anthology including a selection of Atkins’ unpublished writings, as well as critical texts.-Dimitris Lempesis
