ART CITIES:London-Alessandro Roma

Alessandro Roma, Cover The vivid dream, 2107, 25x41cm, , Yamamoto Keiko Rochaix Gallery ArchiveAlessandro Roma plays with the notions of perceiving what is undefined: if on the one hand his works are linked to the classic themes of landscape painting tradition, on the other hand they explore their boundaries and shirk formal techniques in favour of an on-going melding between memory and imagination.

Alessandro Roma’s solo exhibition “A Vivid Dream, can dreaming save us?” is on presentation at Yamamoto Keiko Rochaix Gallery. Roma’s unwavering pictorial approach is anchored in his formal training and years as a painter. In recent years the artist has delved into different techniques, exploring castings, printing on fabrics, ceramics and collage. His new repertoire of inner landscapes, arising from both real experiences and literary sources, has brought a depth to his oeuvre, turning his imagined universe into something tangible and directly accessible to the viewer. As the artist says “When you look my works it is not immediately recognizable as a landscape, but there are some shapes, clues which remind to it. The images are fragmented in order to have different layers of reading like in the nature. I want to let the viewer’s freedom to go inside my work, I do not believe when Art is literal”. The exhibition takes the visitor into a journey that follows Alessandro Roma’s process of creation and approach with different realities. Kaleidoscopic fragments draw together contrasting artistic elements, from ceramics to retro architecture. Enamelled forms depict Roma’s organically romantic view of nature, embellished with organza fabrics and strong brushstrokes. Striking, contrasting patterns manifest an almost psychedelic mood. Playing with perspectives, he interweaves deconstructed motifs with displaced philosophical concepts. The artist, who is known for his unwavering pictorial approach, anchored in his formal training and years as a painter, shows the organic vision of his latest research through inner landscapes in a variety of different techniques such as casting, fabric printing, ceramics and collage. Each form is an important part of his dreamlike universe and takes the visitor into a unique sensorial experience.
