OPEN CALLS: International Master at Icelandic Academy

The two-year English taught international master programme at the Iceland Academy of the Arts supports your individual and progressive art practice. The emphasis is on developments of art practice and research with a view to strengthen insight into the complexities of contemporary art contexts. We look for flexibility and specialization in materials and methods requiring you to be able to position yourself, to critique and challenge problems and situations within the field. On completion of the programme you will acquire an MA in Fine Art.  You will be joining an artistic and intellectual community committed to contemporary art and art education. The MA programme at the department of Fine Art in the Iceland Academy of the Arts supports a practice led study foregrounding the relationship between practice and theory through reading, writing as well as through material exploration and contextual awareness. The programme includes study trips and workshops in Iceland as well as opportunities for international collaborations through our partner institutions and networks. The MA students have access to individual studios, workshop facilities in wood, metal, casting, print, photography and video. There is also a project space for experimentation within the MA studio compound and access to exhibition spaces within the fine art building. The department of Fine Art student union also run their own gallery in the former Living Art Museum premises in Reykjavík. As part of the MA project students have individual exhibitions within the School and a curated final group exhibition in Kópavogur Art Museum – Gerðarsafn in the spring. The Iceland Academy of the Arts is placed in the city of Reykjavik in proximity to a growing but vibrant art-scene across a variety of art disciplines.

About the Iceland Academy of the Arts: One of the unique features of the Iceland Academy of the Arts is the students’ proximity to other disciplines in the arts. Collaboration is encouraged across various arts disciplines on an individual basis as well as through workshops and specific projects. The role of the Iceland Academy of the Arts is to encourage progressive thinking in the arts and to stimulate innovation and development in different fields. The Academy offers education in the arts at the university level and conveys both knowledge and professionalism in the arts to Icelandic society. It operates in a global environment and measures itself against academies that excel in arts education in neighboring countries. The Iceland Academy of the Arts places emphasis on enhancing cooperation with other higher education institutions in the country and various other institutions and enterprises. It is an active participant in international cooperation with bilateral agreements to over 120 higher education institutions in Europe through the Erasmus programme. Within NordPlus, the Academy cooperates with about 90 art academies in the Nordics and the Baltics. Preparations are being made for cooperation with art academies in Asia, including China, Japan and Thailand. A growing number of exchange students study at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, and there are numerous visitors from abroad teaching at the Academy for longer or shorter periods of time.
