ART CITIES:Hamburg-Andreas Slominski
The sculptures of Andreas Slominski (b 1959 in Meppen, Germany) were first noticed in the early ‘80s. While his works dating from that time were the size of fairly small sculptures, in recent years they have grown into often voluminous installations. His so-called “traps” are absurd-looking baits, somewhere between sculpture and functional object.

Similarly to Marcel Duchamp, Andreas Slominski integrates everyday objects into the context of art in order to visualise the process of artistic perception. His work includes bicycles, windmills, found objects and materials taken from everyday life, showing components of his ironic universe along with a tribute to dadaist ideas. Now a major new project by the artist is on presentation at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg. In “THE O OF THE DOOR” Slominski created a large site specific installation with portable toilets that symbolize the ongoing development of our cities. In the exhibition, the artist presents 100 of these portable plastic toilets, industrial products that mutate into independent artworks. Some of them are decorated in a surprising inversion as pictorial objects on the wall. Parts of these portable toilets, including the urinal, the toilet seat, and even the toilet paper holder, are arranged on the walls like colorful panel paintings or in the room like sculptures. Like many of his works, this new large-scale project is also full of amazement and amusement. His work has a special connection to Hamburg, not only due to the fact that he studied and now serves as a professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste.
