INTERVIEW: Artemis Kardoulakis

 

 

 Publisher and Senior Director of the newspaper “Art News”, Mrs. Artemis Kardoulakis with occasion of the exhibition “Polymorfies III” that organizes at the ekfrasi-yianna  grammatopoulou gallery (23/10-8/11/14), with art-works from 74 artists, who support financially the printed edition, narrates the newspaper journey for 23 years issue and her vision. Believes that on-line journalism will not replace the printed one and emphasizes the warm response of the artists in this third call.

Mrs. Kardoulakis, the newspaper “The New Art” issued for twenty years, for the 3rd successive year organizes the exhibition “Polymorfies III” at the ekfrasi-yianna grammatopoulou gallery, with the purpose of financial support from the sale of works by granted artists. How difficult is these days, the issue of a quality newspaper? Why this happens?
The “Art News” circulate for twenty-three consecutive years. The beginning was very difficult as in 1991 that the first sheet was released the visual arts had not such development as they have now. Today, however, despite the fact that the art activities have increased, due to the very acute economic crisis that the country passes, serious problems have been created to us and thereby we facing problems of survival for our newspaper.
The art people, does not support through subscriptions and advertisements, a historic newspaper like yours, which in fact has all these years cooperation with respective high-level publications abroad or is not enough, is something else needed?
All these years, the newspaper relied on the support of artists and art world, however it’s funding is facing many difficulties.
When you started the newspaper, what vision you had? And what are you looking for the future, today?
My vision was to obtain the newspaper prestige and contribute to the development of the visual arts, something that I think was successful.
Your on-line edition is also of high quality and standards. Have you considered making transition only on-line in the future? Do you believe that we are experiencing the end of printed journalism or it will withstand with the tenacity of all those that serve it and love it?
The cost of the printed edition is very high and so it is a good prospect for us to continue with an electronic newspaper. I do not believe that print journalism will disappear despite the rapid growth of the internet
How and who started the idea of the exhibition, three years ago?
The idea was started by me as a necessary condition be treated the problems of the newspaper, and found great response by the side of the artists.
At the end of our interview, we would like to pick a cover of the newspaper, which for you is of great importance.
All covers that have been created by various artists are excellent and I don’t distinguish a single one.
