PORTFOLIO:Elly Economides-Seascapes
It is a purely photographic gaze that Elly Economides casts over the seascapes that her lens has selected. The soft focus in most of her photographs creates a pervasive blurriness that inevitably evokes a strong sense of painterliness, bringing to mind dreamy landscapes of Japanese prints. But the hazy, almost other-worldly areas of soft light often give way, within the same image, to strips of meticulous precision, relentlessly projecting the wrinkled face of a rock, or the moment when drops of water explode into the air, creating thus a magnificent tension, photographic, because it stems from the reminder that, despite it all, what we see here existed – it is real. In frothy slopes, cloudy waters and plateaus of the sea, Elly Economides perceives what painting has no interest in. In her frame, she does not wish to capture the world that she sees, but to isolate those fragments that her gaze plucks out of reality. This act of cutting out itself, however, also constitutes a poetic act of transformation, which, in these images, variations on a theme, stands as a dominant feature.-Elizabeth Plessa
