PERFORMANCE:Evangelia Basdekis-Fata Morgana
Through a new dialogue that has emerged with artists and their works ,starting today we will present you in the Column “Performance”: Contemporary Greek & International Performers, through a recent project, accompanied by a personal statement, which accompanies the specific Performance and introduces the reader to the core of their work.
In my project “Fata Morgana” I broach the following critical inquiry: ‘Can the act of daydreaming insert the trait of slackening in the public space -being a counter proposal to reality’s conditions – undermining thereby its normalcy by creating the ‘cityscape of the other ‘and an actual rift thus in its foregone relationship with it? How is our encounter with the public space transformed via the elements of transcendence, seduction / wandering, and slackening which the act of dreaming itself creates? Through embedding the element of deceleration deep inside the diverse urban environment, through setting it opposite capitalism’s ‘imperative speed’ and the one-sided dimension of things as defined by class consciousness, the act of daydreaming turns into a political seducement. The dialectical mediation which raises various questions and at the same times it creates true rifts in the stereotypical interpretation of the public space as such. It succeeds in offering an alternative dimension in the ways the public space is regularly absorbed. Different kinds of relationships and correlations between the citizen and the space in which he operates are revealed in a radically new perspective. This new condition creates an ‘unprotected’ interplay between viewer and public space, totally open to multiple interpretations. This new form of dialogue created by daydreaming, this newly – born slow ‘route’ is defining the circumstances for the generation and experience of a different kind of objectivity – albeit occasionally.-Evangelia Basdekis
