Founded in October 2000 and published 10 times annually, The Brooklyn Rail provides an independent forum for arts, culture, and politics throughout New York City and far beyond. Chuck Close called The Brooklyn Rail, “This generation’s organ of choice in which art historians, critics, and artists themselves weigh in on the most significant art being shown as well as little known and often overlooked work by emerging, middle, and older aged artists”. Since its inception, cofounder and artistic director Phong Bui and the Rail’s contributors have interviewed over 400 artists for The Brooklyn Rail. The volume “Tell Me Something Good: Artist Interviews from The Brooklyn Rail” by David Zwirner Books, brings together for the first time a selection of sixty of the most influential and seminal interviews with selected and coedited by Jarrett Earnest with Lucas Zwirner. Also the book contains many of the hand-drawn portraits Phong Bui has made of those he has interviewed over the years. While each interview is important in its own right, offering a perspective on the life and work of a specific artist, collectively they tell the story of a journal that has grown during one of the more diverse and surprising periods in visual art.
