ART-PRESENTATION: Magali Reus-Mustard
Magali Reus’s sculptures often resemble the furniture and equipment of modern domestic interiors and public spaces, most frequently functional objects such as fridges, seating, pots and pans. Interested in the graphic language of the objects that surround us, Reus identifies and makes use of formal qualities that carry specific associations, or invite what she calls “A kind of meandering emotional projection”.

For “Mustard” her first Museum exhibition Magali Reus presents a new series of sculptures configured into a site-specific installation. This series of works was developed in her London studio over the past year. By using complex techniques to process a variety of synthetic materials alongside fabrics and leather, Reus has created sculptural forms that avoid direct references to existing objects but still evoke associations with saddles, motorcycles, or blankets. In this new series of works, the artist utilizes complex textile and leatherworking processes like laser engraving and embossing to produce sculptural forms that, while not directly referencing a specific familiar object, nonetheless evoke associations with saddles, blankets and engines. The works are further distinguished by their complex materiality and lavish ornamentation. Architecture will also feature prominently in the exhibition. The artist has designed a spatial installation with walls that will integrate a second suite of works, in addition to the new series, which will be freely arranged around the space. The exhibit is part of a series of solo presentations under the name Stedelijk Contemporary, in which the Stedelijk Museum highlights an artist at the beginning of their career. Her new work was made possible through support by the Stedelijk Museum, the Mondriaan Fund and The Approach.
