REVIEW: Praxis 6-George N. Voyatzoglou Collection

Nikos SiskoOne of the most thoughtfully curated exhibitions that is on show in Athens is the group exhibition “Praxis 6” at the George N. Voyatzoglou Collection. This showcase encapsulates the reflections, symbols, and symbolism of a generation—specifically, that of 1970-75—with a primary focus on painting, the cornerstone of the collection. The exhibition presents a striking variety of works, ranging from Ilias Papailiakis’ monumental piece characterized by his signature single-line technique, to Nikos Kanarelis’ hyper-realistic portrait. Dominating the space is Fani Pantazidou’s large-scale black-and-white drawing, breathtaking in its impact, juxtaposed with Nikos Exarchos’ perforated black sculpture on the ground floor. Meanwhile, Emmanouil Bitsakis captivates with a smaller-scale work, meticulously detailed and profoundly refined. The Collector George Voyatzoglou masterfully curates a show that exudes cohesion, rhythm, power, and sensitivity. Visitors are invited to navigate “Praxis 6” with ease and freedom, engaging in a fertile dialogue between space and artist. Through a curatorial approach that bridges seemingly disparate works via a shared conceptual framework—punctuated by pauses and moments of reflection—the audience can explore, linger, return, and ultimately create their own narrative. On the upper level of the gallery, the visitor encounters artworks of even greater intensity—realistic or not—but all undeniably arresting. Highlights include Nikos Siskos’ canvas where realism and surrealism pulse with vibrant tension, Lamprini Boviatsou’s extraordinary dual-natured portrait that is at once realistic and dreamlike, and Christoforos Katsadiotis’ exquisite prints tucked away in a small, surprise-filled room. This is an exhibition not to be missed (!) -Efi Michalarou
